The article states that they're looking to make it several life sentences applied concurrently. I assume they're trying to make sure that he stays in jail for the rest of his very unnatural life.
And as much as I'd like to see the case brought to trial, I also really wouldn't want to traumatize the boys any more than they already have been. I assume that's why the prosecution is try to work a deal.
