Cry me a damn river

The President Packs the Press Corps

Give it up Dana Milbank. Seriously. Are you really going to compare Nico Pitney asking President Obama to some of the bullshit that came out of the Bush press conferences?
Do you know why the White House called Pitney and told him to ask his question about Iran? It's because that's all that he's been concentrating on, pretty much night and day, for the last couple weeks. Pitney's question was the only difficult question Obama had to answer in that press conference. Questions about whether or not he's smoking? Really? Believe me, I don't give a flying fuck if he is or isn't.
Can the press corps at least try to display half the professionalism that Nico Pitney has? Or is that too much to ask?

A possible ray of hope

L.A. mayor and council weighing retirement option for reducing city's workforce

You know I'm mentioned more than once that it's a difficult time to be a City employee. (full disclosure, I'm a City employee. This is being written on my own time and on my own computer. No City resources are being utilized in the writing.)

I'd like to highlight this quote from Bernard Parks.

Councilman Bernard C. Parks, who also serves on the committee, would not discuss specifics of the proposal, but voiced fears that the city would not be able to cover the increased pension cost of workers who retire before they are eligible.

"I don't think [the pension system] can afford it," he said.

Did you know that Parks gets $22,000 A MONTH in pension payments from his prior position as Police Chief? That's on top of his salary as a LA City Councilman. I'm leaving out the part that the majority of people retiring under this deal would make a fraction A FRACTION of what he makes a month.

James Inhofe is a goon and an unserious legislator.

Inhofe Turns Down Meeting With Sotomayor -- Mind Already Made Up

How else do you explain it? He's never actually bothered to meet Justice Sotomayor, but his mind is made up. Dear Oklahoma, DO BETTER! Why do you insist on sending people like Coburn and Inhofe to the Senate? Do you not realize that their ridiculous and harmful decisions resonate throughout the entire country? Just stop it!

Just pointing out.

Sore Loser Norm Coleman's antics have prevented Al Franken from being seated in the Senate for 6 months. And have denied Minnesota equal representation in government.

Beauty and grace

This is Personal

Please go and read this post by Mark Blumenthal.

No Randall Terry, you are wrong

Terry Says Obama Makes Attacks Inevitable; Also Serves Beer, Wings

(That's not unusual, Terry's been wrong about everything anyway.)
The person most directly responsible for violence is the person who commits the act.
It's goon like Terry and his ilk who are calling for violent action. It is they who are responsible.

Another domestic terrorist

Gunman, guards exchange fire in Holocaust Museum

What the fuck kind of insane title is that for the article, btw AP? Seriously? "Exchanged" fire? No, assholes. A crazy ass DOMESTIC TERRORIST walked in to U.S. Holocaust Museum and opened fire.

Update: the security guard the domestic terrorist shot has died. The terrorist is yet another rightwing lunatic murderer.

Domestic terrorist win another round

Slain Kansas abortion provider's clinic to close

Slow, sarcastic, nasty clapping.

Well done you dammed domestic terrorists. First you murder a man whose whole career was dedicated to helping women in need. And now you've guaranteed that others in need of desperate help can't get it. I hope you're fucking proud of yourselves. //sarcasm

I got an email

Which I'm not going to actually reproduce here. But it was from the LAPD. This year Police and Fire are going to be taking some budget hits as well as the rest of the City departments. Have I mentioned before that Police and Fire account for 70% of the City's ENTIRE budget? And that for the last 2 years their budgets have not been touched AT ALL? Yup, 30% of the City services have been adjusting to try and cover the deficits the City has faced. The City Council found $26 million. Which went to LAPD, so that they could continue hiring officers. Since Mayor Villaraigosa made it his priority to have 10,000 officers across the City. Well, sorry, I think that money could have been better spent.
And so today I get an email from LAPD asking me to sign their petition asking the Mayor not to cut their budget.
And I'm just not going to sign it. In fact,

Dear LAPD,
Hi, as a fellow City of Los Angeles employee, maybe you'd like to support the rest of us City workers. After all, we've been taking hits for the last 2 years. We can't order basic supplies. Nor get work done on our buildings. And we're facing layofffs.
Maybe you could see your way around to supporting us.
Best,
shayera

Full disclosure, I am an employee of the City of Los Angeles. This entry was written on my own time and on my own computer. Not using City resources.

Vigils for Euna Lee and Laura Ling

Please Help Euna Lee and Laura Ling Get Released From North Korea

(I'm copying a good portion of David's post)

While the case of Roxana Saberi stirred enough attention in the media to extract her release from Iran, the similar case of two journalists detained in North Korea since March has not been given the same level of notoreity. The Current TV journalists and San Francisco residents, Euna Lee and Laura Ling, will stand trial for "hostile acts" against the DPRK on Thursday, and their families are speaking out after months of silence, calling for the United States to work for the girls' release.

"Our families have been quiet because the situation is very sensitive and we've been really trying to allow diplomacy to take its course," Lisa Ling, Laura's sister, said on CNN's "Larry King Live" on Monday night. "But you know, you'd have to be hiding under a rock not to see what's going on in the Korean Peninsula.

"I mean tensions are so heated," she continued, "and the girls are essentially in the midst of this nuclear standoff."

Late last month, North Korea conducted nuclear and missile tests, drawing the condemnation of the U.N. Security Council.

"We just felt like it was time for us to talk publicly and try and encourage our two governments to try to communicate, to try and bring our situation to a resolution on humanitarian grounds -- to separate the issues," said Ling, who is a special correspondent with CNN.

David Dayen, who wrote the Calitics piece, knows Euna Lee.
If you can, please find and attend vigils for these women.
There is a petition calling for their release that you can sign.
And this is the link to the Facebook group which has listings of the vigils around the country.
The one in Los Angeles is tonight, Wokcano, 1413 5th Street, Santa Monica, 6:30pm

Apparently the mayor is a closet Republican

(full disclosure: I am an employee of the City of Los Angeles. I am writing this on my own time and on my own computer.)

L.A. budget passes with 1,200 layoffs

The Mayor and his negotiating team walked away from negotiations with the City's unions. He would rather raise the unemployment rate across the City than come up with a workable plan. A 10% cut in my wages means one less work day every pay period. That affects every single employee. How are we supposed to keep libraries open without people to staff them adequately? There has been massive upswings in foo traffic into our buildings. People are looking for help. Where are they supposed to go?

Well boo hoo to them

Abortion foes fear backlash to Tiller's murder

Fuck you AP. I'm supposed to feel bad that a group of people who actively harass and HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO BE VIOLENT are worried about "backlash" because a member of THEIR MOVEMENT committed MURDER and domestic terrorism? Yeah, well, frankly I don't give a damn about them. In this country a woman has the right of choice. That is the LAW!! Anti-choice groups are protesting the law of the land.
This murder happens less than a month after anti-choice protesters caused endless scenes at Notre Dame when the President was there.
I don't give a fucking damn that anti choice harassers are worried that they're going to face a backlash.
I do give many a damn that a good and decent man, who dedicated his life to helping women in need was brutally and senselessly murdered. I care about the family he eaves behind. I care about the women he helped. They're the ones who are important. Not the bullies. Them I couldn't care less about.
